New Cast Clocks in for "24"

"Jack's back with a whole new set of friends--and enemies.

As Fox's 24 heads into its fifth adrenaline-filled, sleep-deprived day, producers are restocking the cast with fresh blood, including former Designing Women star Jean Smart and young actors Brady Corbet and Connie Britton.

Details for the new season are being kept under lock and key--the network wants to make sure nothing leaks before Day Five kicks off in January. Producers and publicists are not even publicly confirming that series star Keifer Sutherland will be back as CTU agent Jack Bauer to save the world from yet another dastardly conspiracy. (Surprise: He will.)

When last we left our hero at the end of Day Four, Bauer had faked his own death and gone underground. (Long story short: Bauer broke into the Chinese embassy to kidnap an informant; during the raid, the consul got killed and the Chinese wanted to pin it on Bauer. The White House disavowed any knowledge of the mission and an agent was sent to take Bauer out.)

"I'm pretty sure Kiefer's going to have to come back," Mary Lynn Rajskub, who will be back as CTU computer whiz Chloe O'Brian, tells E! Online. "I'm just making a guess. I think in order to make the show happen, I'll bet he's going to be there."

Asked about the top-secret nature of the series, Rajskub, adds: "I never have anything to say because there are so many red warnings: 'DO NOT TELL ANYBODY WHAT'S GOING ON!' And then we get the scripts at the very last second anyway."

Also among the confirmed returnees: Gregory Itzen as President Logan and Carlos Bernard as Tony Almeida, despite the character seemingly exiting the show for good at the end of last season, when Tony and Michelle Dessler ( Reiko Aylesworth) appeared ready to give up the terrorist-hunting lifestyle to rekindle their marriage.

As for the newcomers, Smart, who won two Emmys for guest stints on Frasier and most recently appeared in the indie hit Garden State, will play Logan's first lady.

Britton, best known for her work on Spin City, is apparently going to be Bauer's latest love interest (good luck with that). And Corbet, whose credits include the indie drama Mysterious Skin, will reportedly play Britton's son, who has a strong bond with Bauer early on in the season.

Fox declined to elaborate on any plot points for next season. Last week, speaking to the Television Critics Association, Fox Entertainment President Peter Liguori, made it clear that any news pertaining to 24 was strictly classified and on a need-to-know basis.

"It's going to take some bamboo shoots for me to talk about 24," he said.

A revolving door of characters has become something of a tradition for 24 as producers seek to keep things interesting and the twists moving at a breakneck pace. Previous key cast members like Elisha Cuthbert (Kim Bauer) and Dennis Haysbert (President David Palmer) only made limited appearances last year, while several popular players hit the unemployment line after seeing their popular characters killed off, including Leslie Hope (Jack's wife, Terri Bauer), Sarah Clarke (Nina Myers) and Penny Johnson Jerald (Sherry Palmer).

Like last season, the upcoming fifth installment will premiere on the network as a four-hour, two-evening event in January and run straight through until May with new episodes. Before the launch, Fox will make available a podcast recapping the fourth season and setting the stage for Day Five. "- E! Online

  • Is 24 a pretty good show? Ashley has recommended it to me, and I was just wondering what exactly it is about. I know you told me about it Ash, but my mind is a blank right now.

  • "24" is one of the best shows that I have ever seen. It is so intense and nerve-wracking. The characters are great and the acting is spectacular. Jack Bauer ( the main character) is a counter-terrorism agent, so he deals with high-risk situations. Last season the main terrorist leader had a nuclear missile and was going to launch it towards Los Angeles, so you know... they had to find the leader ( following very few clues), capture or kill the terrorists, deal with hostage situations, stop the bomb, etc..... Very intense. There are 24 episodes per season, one for every hour of the day. It's pretty violent and has a little bit of language, but otherwise it's great!

  • Oh Sara, it's so awesome!! My favorite show EVER!!! I'm disappointed that it won't be back till January, but we will get a four hour, two night premiere, and that will be incredible!! And I'm glad Tony will be back, I was afraid they were trying to write him out of the script. :(

  • Wow! I really should watch it then! Are they showing re-runs?

  • I don't think they are showing reruns, Sara. If you really wanted to, you could buy Season 4 at Target for $50. :) Otherwise, you'll have to wait for next season.
